# Video Too Large

> Video exceeds the upload or URL size limit

**HTTP Status:** 413

```json theme={null}
{
  "code": "video_too_large",
  "message": "The uploaded video exceeds the 100 MB limit. Send videos up to 500 MB via url.",
  "request_id": "req_3f6a2c1e-9b0d-4e7a-8c21-5d1f0a9b7e42",
}
```

## Reasons and How to Fix

### Upload Exceeds 100 MB

Video uploads via `file` to `POST /remove` are limited to 100 MB. Nothing is billed.

**To fix, do one of the following:**

1. **Use `url` instead** — host the file somewhere public and let Poof fetch it. The limit via URL is 500 MB.
2. **Re-encode at a lower bitrate** — most camera and screen-recording files are far larger than they need to be.
3. **Trim** the clip to the part you need. The [5 minute limit](/errors/video-too-long) applies as well.

### File at `url` Exceeds 500 MB

Videos fetched from a URL are limited to 500 MB. Re-encode or trim the source.

### Re-encoding Tips

The output is capped at 1080p, so there is no quality benefit in uploading 4K. Downscale and re-encode with ffmpeg:

```bash theme={null}
# Downscale to 1080p and re-encode at a moderate bitrate
ffmpeg -i large.mov -vf "scale=-2:1080" -c:v libx264 -crf 23 -preset medium -c:a aac small.mp4
# Keep only the first 30 seconds
ffmpeg -i large.mov -t 30 -c copy trimmed.mov
```

```python theme={null}
import subprocess
subprocess.run([
    "ffmpeg", "-i", "large.mov",
    "-vf", "scale=-2:1080",
    "-c:v", "libx264", "-crf", "23",
    "-c:a", "aac",
    "small.mp4",
], check=True)
```
