# Green screen video: any clip on chroma green

> Turn any video into a green screen clip without filming on green. One API call returns an MP4 with the subject on #00ff00, or on any colour you choose.

Poof can put the subject of any video on a solid colour, so you get a green screen clip without filming in front of a green screen. Ask for `format=mp4` with `bg_color=#00ff00` and the result is an H.264 MP4 that plays everywhere and keys cleanly in any editor or streaming tool.

The request and job flow are the same as in [Video background removal](/guides/video-background-removal).

## Request

<CodeGroup>
  ```bash cURL theme={null}
  curl -X POST https://api.poof.bg/v1/remove \
    -H "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
    -F "file=@clip.mp4" \
    -F "format=mp4" \
    -F "bg_color=#00ff00"
  ```

  ```python Python theme={null}
  job = client.remove_background("clip.mp4", format="mp4", bg_color="#00ff00", wait=True)
  client.download(job, "clip-green.mp4")
  ```

  ```typescript TypeScript theme={null}
  const job = await poof.removeBackground('clip.mp4', {
    format: 'mp4',
    bgColor: '#00ff00',
    wait: true,
  });
  ```
</CodeGroup>

Poll the job and download `result_url` as usual. Audio is kept.

## Any solid colour

`bg_color` takes any colour, so the same call gives you a finished video on a brand colour, a blue screen or plain white:

| Use | `bg_color` |
| - | - |
| Chroma-key green | `#00ff00` |
| Blue screen (for green subjects) | `#0000ff` |
| White, for product clips | `white` (the default) |
| A brand colour | Any hex such as `#6466f1`, or `rgb(100, 102, 241)` |

Without `bg_color`, MP4 output is on white.

## Green screen or transparent video?

A green screen MP4 is the most compatible option: every player, phone, editor and streaming tool can use it, and the file is small. The subject's edges are already blended with the green, so your editor's keyer does the rest.

If your editor supports alpha, a transparent file skips keying altogether and avoids green spill on hair and fine edges. Use `format=mov` (ProRes 4444) for editors or `format=webm` for the web. See [Transparent video](/guides/transparent-video).

## Without code

In **Studio** at [dash.poof.bg](https://dash.poof.bg), upload a clip, choose MP4 as the video format and set the background colour to `#00ff00`. Through the [MCP server](/integrations/mcp), ask your assistant to "put this video on a green screen".
